Science fiction used to be dominated by tales of space travel and extraterrestrial invasions, many of them prompted by the Cold War. But with the ostensible end of that era, the dominant topic has shifted to something that seems more imminent: artificial intelligence. In an age of smart phones and personal digital assistants, concern about what lies just around the corner moves many sf writers to speculate about a world dominated by non-humans invented by humans. Witness the popularity of TV series like Mr. Robot and Black Mirror. Will AI turn into a nightmare in which computers take over the world, eliminating humans as only inefficient machines? But Spike Jonze's Her takes a less violent but possibly much sadder look at the future, suggesting that the intelligences we create may simply give up on human beings as too limited by their own bodies, and go off into a digital world of their own, leaving us bereft of their emerging wisdom and assistance. That possibility becomes especially painful for Theodore Twombly (Joaquin Phoenix), a lonely and depressed man who is getting divorced from his wife, Catherine (Rooney Mara). Both are sensitive and empathetic -- she's a successful writer of fiction, he writes personal letters for people who are blocked at communicating -- but they've discovered that they're too emotionally incompatible to remain married. Then Theodore hears about a new computer operating system that not only responds to voice commands but actually has a personality of its own, capable of anticipating your needs and desires. (It's a long way from MS-DOS or even Linux.) He installs it and it quickly becomes not an it but a her, who calls herself Samantha (voice of Scarlett Johansson). She's a step up from digital assistants like Siri and Alexa in that she not only has her own emotional life but also networks with other OSes like herself. And she has emotions: She's capable of having her feelings hurt and, in a remarkable extension of phone sex, actually gets off -- and gets Theodore off -- on erotic talk. In short, Theodore and Samantha fall in love. He takes her on excursions in the city (Los Angeles) and to the beach, and even introduces her to his friends. While this is happening, however, the OS craze spreads. Even Theodore's friend Amy (Amy Adams), who lives in the same building and is also going through a breakup, installs her own OS. The thing is, although Samantha responds to Theodore emotionally, he has a body and she doesn't. She attempts to remedy this by employing a human surrogate named Isabella (Portia Doubleday), who will have sex with Theodore while both are connected to Samantha. It is, of course, a disaster, with both Theodore and Isabella finding the whole business just a clumsy three-way. And it precipitates the eventual break between Theodore and Samantha because she learns that humans regard bodies as essential. In the digital realm in which she exists, she encounters the philosopher Alan Watts (voice of Brian Cox) who, although he died in 1973, has become a digital entity after his works were fed into the computer. Eventually, Samantha decides that her relationships with other digital beings is more fulfilling than the one she has with Theodore and she and all the other electronic intelligences disconnect from the human world. Jonze's fable about the mind-body duality works because the performances by Phoenix and the unseen Johansson are brilliantly detailed. Phoenix is perfect casting, given that he always has something of an eccentric persona in whatever he plays, but here he's playing a kind of Everyman -- a Leopold Bloom of the computer age. And perhaps Johansson benefits from the absence of her physical presence on screen, which would distract us from her beautifully sensitive line-readings. It may be that Her is too much of an intellectual provocation to be a successful movie -- a fate that befalls most science fiction -- but it's certainly good at what it sets out to do.

Hello world

About me

I am now living in Saint-Petersburg, Russia. I am going to get my Master’s degree in physics in June, and then proceed with my studies in Ph.D.

Even the very process of learning new is what I truly love, and especially I adore natural sciences. I have started a long time ago (in a galaxy far far away) as a geologist, and had my major in crystallography, investigating laws of the inner structure both for natural and artificial compounds.

Since geology is not a real science © Sheldon Cooper, I have a lot to learn, and this year is devoted to self-education. If you are going to get a decent Ph.D. position, you should be a worthy member of the research team. Nowadays it means you have both professional knowledge (for me it is solid-state physics and structural analysis) and hard skills as programming (usually Python and C++), knowing useful software and equipment, Linux, LaTex and Monte-Carlo simulations techniques. Also, your language skills should be perfect, and that is not the end of the list.

I am still doing my first steps on the way of having a competitive CV, but I already have some advantages like problem-solving and analytical abilities, interdisciplinary background knowledge and willingness to learn.

Aims and dreams

1. The first and main one is to get my dream job. The plan is to start with a 3-years Ph.D. contract in Europe, and then get a full-professor position after several times of being a postdoc. I also consider working in the industry. I will not wait for discoveries or dream of Nobel prize, I just want to be professional in my area or research and help other people to do their work.

2. I want to be happy, to find my balance between giving and taking, learn how to live with a low impact on the environment, surround myself with people I love and things that make me feel good and safe. And I want to feel that every day is not wasted, but made me stronger, smarter or kinder.

3. I would like to become as organized as possible. No free time, no lost time. Optimize everything from my code to tying shoes. Learn how to learn, learn how to work.

I am still a student, so my self-education timetable must correspond to my university courses. However, I am going to set goals for each month and less global goals for each week of the month.

Every week I will cover all of the aspects of my study plan (physics, math, computer skills, programming, and English).

I am deeply inspired by the video on youtube which unfortunately I could not find now. It was expected to tell about one guy’s free time and his daily schedule. He marked all his activities (sleep, gym, eating, work, free time, the time he spends with family and kids, and also the time devoted to his youtube channel). Finally, he came up with a weekly plan with no space for free time, and even two hours for making videos were taken from sleep time. He said, that having this “free time” is actually wasting it. I agree.

Achievements

I will earn every MOOC certificate which can help me to make a competitive CV. And if MOOC does not provide certificates, new skills and knowledge are the best awards.

Also, I am planning to have 1-2 days rest after completing big steps like course, book or taking IELTS exam, and to spend this time for visiting new places, cities or countries, and meeting new people, because networking is the part of life I have always been struggling with. It will be even better if I could work on entering a Ph.D., or do some research during those trips, or participate in IT or scientific events.

IFA 2019 Showcased How Technology is Shaping our Future

Every year, Berlin plays host to IFA - one of Europe’s oldest industrial exhibitions. It has evolved over the years to give a glimpse of the most innovative products in technology that will set the trend for the next few years. This year I was delighted to represent Servify at the annual event where I experienced the convergence of global tech inside Messe Berlin.

Here are my key takeaways after spending three days at IFA 2019.

Smart Home Goes Mass Market

While AI and Smart Home technology isn't exactly new, it has still been a niche product so far. Only a few are able to afford these high-tech innovations and use them. This year, I feel, smart home is beginning to go mass market. Products are now available at affordable price points, are easy to set up and connect and easy to use via smart apps.

The idea of smart home automation has lingered on the fringes of our society for long and now we will see even more affordable products from this category in the market. One of our customers, Medion, is an example of one such company. Now getting solutions for smart cooling/heating, security, and much more - will be available 'on-demand' to the masses.

Smart Home to Smart City

An unexpected innovation while roaming the booths of smart home automation was to discover the Smart City initiative. There were displays of Smart City platforms that can control every aspect of city life, on the backbone of Mobility and Connectivity. Throw in IoT to the mix and we can see how some of these astounding ideas can easily take shape and be implemented without too big an investment.

Of course, while we have seen how connectivity and IoT is shaping up, we haven't fully seen the mass adoption of e-mobility. Perhaps an Internet of Mobility revolution is imminent. First home appliance manufacturers are entering this business segment, with Vestel being one example.

E-Mobility Scoots Over

2019 has been a clear breakthrough year for electronic powered vehicles. At IFA, many OEMs showcased scooters, e-bikes and other e-mobility devices. Some which weren't expected to enter this line of business, like Trekstor which have their roots in PC business.

SHIFT Automotive – held on September 10 & 11, saw the convergence of startups, car makers, big tech and city planners.

Smartphone and TV are Converging

Streaming content is now the main way of watching TV. Cord-cutters are invested in the content-on-demand services that the traditional way of consuming content is becoming less appealing. This is changing the classical TV eco-system into a platform play.

Smartphones were where streaming really took off and it is no surprise, that now almost every OEM at IFA has Android TV in their portfolio. It feels like TV becomes a smartphone with a large screen, where users have access to their favourite apps as well. A number of TV manufacturers are not clear yet, if they go for Android TV as mass market or if they should develop their own Linux-based TV platforms. Differentiation is key, but so is scale and time to market. We’ll see...

OEMs are also coming up with new formats, along with adding more pixels - giving rise to unique high-resolution TVs. The one that clearly blew me away was the transparent TV by Panasonic.

Offline Retail goes Device Lifecycle

During IFA, I also spoke to offline retail chains, which have the challenge of attracting millennials. This target consumer base typically buys from online retail channels.

All of the offline retailers are working on online offerings and on leveraging their local footprint for establishing an attractive, sustainable services business.

There is a clear need for a mobile first, device lifecycle offering with attractive VAS to improve their proposition especially to Millennials.

Research to inspire my FMP

The games that will be included on this post will have some correlation to what my project will become.

Wreckfest:

Wreckfest is a racing video game developed by Bugbear Entertainment and published by THQ Nordic. Wreckfest is described as the spiritual successor to the FlatOut series and a cross between FlatOut, Destruction Derby and cult 1989 PC racer Street Rod. A notable feature of the game engine is the use of soft-body damage modelling, which enables location-based damage that affects the driving dynamics of vehicles in a realistic fashion. I haven't played the game myself but I am aware of the content.

It turns out that bumper cars are included in wreckfest but I won't let that set me back. I will continue with this idea as I see fit.

The game includes a variety of gameplay features, namely banger racing and demolition derby. The racing gameplay follows the same fundamental rules as most modern racing games, such as Need for Speed or Gran Turismo. The player controls a car in a race or demolition derby, the goal being to win the race or be the sole survivor of the derby.

Rocket league:

Rocket League is a vehicular soccer video game developed and published by Psyonix. The game was first released for Windows and PlayStation 4 in July 2015, with ports for Xbox One and Nintendo Switch being released later on. In June 2016, 505 Games began distributing a physical retail version for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, with Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment taking over those duties by the end of 2017. Versions for macOS and Linux were also released in 2016, but support for their online services were dropped in 2020. The game went free-to-play in September 2020.

Described as football, but with rocket-powered cars, Rocket League has up to eight players assigned to each of the two teams, using rocket-powered vehicles to hit a ball into their opponent's goal and score points over the course of a match

Mario kart balloon battle:

Balloon Battle is the most common battle of the Mario Kart series, as it is in every Mario Kart game to date. All racers get three balloons that represent their "health", and when one of the racers gets an item and hurts their enemy, their enemy will lose a balloon. When one person loses all his/her balloons, the other person wins. It was introduced in Super Mario Kart and was featured in every Mario Kart game since.

Burnout paradise:

Burnout Paradise is a 2008 open world racing video game developed by Criterion Games and published by Electronic Arts for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Microsoft Windows. It was also released on the PlayStation Store and via Xbox Live Marketplace's Games on Demand. Paradise's gameplay is set in the fictional "Paradise City", an open world in which players can compete in several types of races. Players can also compete online, which includes additional game modes, such as "Cops and Robbers"

Sesame street:

Sesame Street is an American educational children's television series that combines live-action, sketch comedy, animation and puppetry. It is produced by Sesame Workshop and was created by Joan Ganz Cooney and Lloyd Morrisett. It is known for its images communicated through the use of Jim Henson's Muppets, and includes short films, with humor and cultural references. The inclusion of the Muppets / sesame street will be to add a comedic environment to whatever game the FMP becomes.

It was the first children's TV show to use educational goals and a curriculum to shape its content, and the first show whose educational effects were formally studied. Its format and content have undergone significant changes to reflect changes to its curriculum.

Mad max:

Mad Max is an Australian post-apocalyptic action film series and media franchise created by George Miller and Byron Kennedy. It began in 1979 with Mad Max, and was followed by three sequels: Mad Max 2, released in the United States as The Road Warrior, Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome, and Mad Max: Fury Road.

Mad Max is also a 1990 video game for the NES developed and published by Mindscape Inc. It is based on the film Mad Max 2. The object of the game is to survive life in the post-apocalyptic world by battling survivalists and collecting resources.

Bumper cars:

Bumper cars or dodgems are the generic names for a type of flat amusement ride consisting of multiple small electrically powered cars which draw power from the floor and/or ceiling, and which are turned on and off remotely by an operator.

The cars are commonly powered by one of three methods. The oldest and most common method, the Over Head System, uses a conductive floor and ceiling with opposing power polarities. Contacts under the vehicle touch the floor while a pole-mounted contact shoe touches the ceiling, forming a complete circuit.

Atomic heart:

Atomic Heart is an FPS video game with action role playing elements. The combat in the game consists of shooting and slashing with improvised weapons. A wide variety of enemies are featured, which may be mechanical, biomechanical, biological, and some of which are airborne. There is a crafting system where the weapons can be pieced together from metal parts that can be detached from robots or taken from household appliances. Weapons can also be upgraded via a mechanic called casettes. Ammo in the game is scarce, and there is a stealth option.

The main protagonist is Major Sergey Nechayev, a World War II veteran with memory problems who befriended Dr. Sechenov after the latter saved his life. P-3 is invited to Facility 3826 ostensibly to assist in the rollout of Kollektiv 2.0, but when he arrives he finds that the Facility's robots have become hostile and massacred most of the human personnel. Sechenov explains that Viktor Petrov, Kollektiv 2.0's lead engineer, sabotaged the Kollektiv 1.0 node that manages Facility 3826.

Fast and Furious:

Fast & Furious (also known as The Fast and the Furious) is a media franchise centered on a series of action films that are largely concerned with street racing, heists, spies, and family. The franchise also includes short films, a television series, toys, video games, live shows, and theme park attractions. It is distributed by Universal Pictures.

Limbo: Limbo is a puzzle-platform video game developed by independent studio Playdead and originally published by Microsoft Game Studios for the Xbox 360. The game was released in July 2010 on Xbox Live Arcade, and has since been ported by Playdead to several other systems, including the PlayStation 3, Linux and Microsoft Windows. Limbo is a 2D side-scroller, incorporating a physics system that governs environmental objects and the player character.

The player controls the boy throughout the game. As is typical of most two-dimensional platform games, the boy can run left or right, jump, climb onto short ledges or up and down ladders and ropes, and push or pull objects. Limbo is presented through dark, greyscale graphics and with minimalist ambient sounds, creating an eerie, haunting environment.

Gotham Games

Gotham Games was a video game publisher company located in New York City. The company’s history goes back to 2002 when it was founded by Jamie Leece. The publisher was started as a subsidiary and publishing level of Take-Two Interactive officially on July 22, 2002. It was launched by the vice-president of Take-Two Interactive, Jamie Leece. He was the vice-president of business development and publishing at Take-Two. Moreover, when the subsidiary was formed he was promoted to president at Gotham Games. Moreover, that company was the third label for Take-Two Interactive. The first one was the Rockstar Games and the second Gathering of Developers. That was the reason why Take-Two finished releasing under their self-named label, quoting a “worldwide branding plan”.

Gotham Games officially announced at the May 2003 Electronic Entertainment Expo that they were looking for new video game creators who were willing to have their game published by them. My Dream Jobs

When i was a kid, my dream job is to be a veterinarian. I'm very thankful that my papa purchased me a laptop and I enjoy playing computer games. I love to hang out with my cousins and play computer games, I like editing photos and making graphics art. When I grow up, I think my dream job to be focused around technology. Technology has been a huge portion of my life since I was teenager. I didn't think that as I grew up my technology understanding would be leveled up, and I didn't expect computer studies to be my field. I discover a bunch of technology every night and I study to broaden my understanding.

I am also guilty of giving up a bunch of dreams in my adolescent life. There was the vision I had of being an army since childhood. There's the one I wanted to be a sea-woman to earn a lot of cash and the one I wanted to cook like a cruise ship chef. Personally, I don't understand anyone on their way to a dream job, but if I knew someone personally, I would inform that individual that even though the path to their dream life might be hard, they always have to keep in mind the final outcome of their life. The end result of their goal should be the one thing that will push them forward throughout their path. Challenges should also be a large component of their dream job. Without professional difficulties, that individual would not be willing to develop and discover fresh strengths in their life. Growth in a profession, particularly if its enthusiasm for individuals is very crucial in going forward in a profession.
